As many of you are aware the demand for the Leisure Pool decreased significantly in the last quarter of 2011, as players graduated to the Main Pool. The committee gave the viability of the Leisure Pool considerable thought and determined that we would have two tables (8 players) set aside (exclusive of the 64 player Main Pool) where players could register (at a reduced fee of $10 per person – to cover costs), and play in the leisure pool to learn and have fun. There will be NO TOP PLAYER prizes for Leisure pool in 2012 nor will Leisure players qualify for the Grand Champion Competition (there is not Leisure Champion in 2012).

Leisure players will still play using the tournament rotating sheets and schedules to learn how to play in tournament fashion and keep scores. We will award a Most Honest Player prize each tournament night (prize is a free euchre night for the following tournament) should all eight players play. In the event that we do not get 4 players minimum players can attend and go through Euchre Boot Camp with some of our volunteers.

If the Leisure Pool does not attract players over the course of February and March, we will consider discontinuing the Leisure Pool entirely.

FINALLY! We’ve added some functionality to our online registration system.

MULTIPLE EVENT REGISTRATION

We have upgraded the event registration system we use online, and installed additional functionality so that you can REGISTER YOURSELF AND FRIENDS FOR MORE THAN ONE EUCHRE NIGHT AT A TIME.

Here’s how in 10 EASY STEPS:

Go to the page: http://www.mcctorontochoir.com/events/registration

Review the list of Euchre Nights for 2012 – notice new buttons (Tweet and Like) under each Euchre Night to share with friends – we encourage you to use them!

Notice “Register for Event or Add to Cart” links at the bottom of any given Euchre Night Listing.

To register for more than one Euchre Night use the “ADD TO CART” link, the area will refresh to say View Cart. For single night registration click “register”

Continue to click “Add To Cart” for each Night you wish to register for.

Once completed adding all nights to cart, click on any View Cart link.

This next page will list all the Nights you wish to register for.

Use the drop down under each night listed to say how many people you wish to register for each night, then click “Continue to Registration” Button.

This will bring you to a page to fill out registrant details. Complete the registration details for each night (you can use the drop down to select same info after completing the first details if you are registering yourself multiple times and no one else, so you don’t have to type your info in repeatedly).

Click “Confirm and Go To Payment Page” when you are done entering registrant information, then choose payment to complete payment and your registration.

This means that if you want to play in Feb, April and September, in Main and a friend wants to play for example in leisure in Feb, you can register and pay in ONE TRANSACTION! Regstration made easy.

IMPORTANT NOTICE

In 2011 we had several nights of chaos as registrants DID NOT SHOW UP TO PLAY – particularly players who registered online, but did NOT COMPLETE ONLINE PAYMENT.

We have decided that UNTIL PAYMENT IS RECEIVED (either through PayPal (which allows credit card payment) or in person at the church PRIOR TO EUCHRE NIGHT) players will NOT BE CONSIDERED REGISTERED TO PLAY and you will NOT have a seat in the tournament. We have had to do this as a safeguard against what occurred in 2o11, where large numbers of player did not show up and tournament play is in jeopardy when players do not show up. We find payment keeps people committed to attending.

Players with a solid history of playing with us and attending faithfully will be granted special consideration if payment is requested to be made at the door.

New Players who have never played with us before MUST prepay in advance to secure a spot in the tournament.

The Euchre Tournaments in 2011 raised a unexpected amount that will be used to fund the Choir's upcoming cd project.

On Friday, November 25th we held the final Euchre tournament of 2011. Nine tournaments in total were played. Each tournament had the maximum number of 64 players. These tournaments were intended to be fundraisers for the Choir/MCC Music Ministry, specifically to fund the Choir’s upcoming cd recording project, set to be recorded in May of 2012.

The Euchre Committee is proud to announce that the 2011 Euchre tournaments raised a total of $17,560.00

Thank you to everyone who played at any of our tournaments this year, and for supporting the MCC Toronto Choir and its outreach and activities. Without the support of players we would not have been as successful!

We look forward to another great year of Euchre in 2012.

On Friday, November 25th we held the final Euchre tournament of 2011. For 9 tournaments, players have been competing for the Euchre Grand Champion title.

The scores have been tallied and we have a winner! Players had to play in 5 tournaments to qualify for the Grand Champion Prize of a trip for 2 to Las Vegas! If players played more than 5 tournaments, their TOP 5 SCORES were used to get their average score.

The race was extremely, and we mean EXTREMELY CLOSE! In fact, there was a tie with the top two players averaging 59 points each! In order to determine the official winner, we went back to the scores, and averaged the top 6 scores….still a tie, so we went to the top 7 score average….still a tie!

What are the chances? So, we went to the average of their top 8 scores, and FINALLY the tie was broken – BY ONLY ONE POINT!

The Euchre Grand Champion for 2011 is
Dan McIntyre

Congratulations go out to Dan McIntyre who is the official Euchre Grand Champion for 2011. Dan was officially crowned the Euchre Grand Champion at our announcement at the 11 AM Service at MCC Toronto on November 27, 2011! Dan now has bragging rights AND a Weekend Getaway for 2 to Las Vegas (including airfare and casino/hotel stay) courtesy of Carol Steward, CTC Travel Professional International, with $200 spending money courtesy of the MCC Toronto Choir. Congratulations Dan! – or should we say CHAMP!

First Runner-Up Winner is Marg Ketcheson

As First Runner-Up Marg has won a dinner for 2 at Prohibition Gastrohouse and a free year of euchre tournaments in 2012! Congratulations Marg. See you in 2012![/toggle_content]

Second Runner-Up Winner is Wendy Robbins

As Second Runner-Up Wendy has won a Cooking Class for 4 from Lisa Shamai Cusineire and a $40 LCBO gift certificate for some wine to bring to her cooking class (which ends in dinner)! Congratulations Wendy!

Ties were the norm this year, and we did have a tie between the third and fourth highest average scores and again, we went back to the scores to determine the second runner-up. Terry Walpole and Wendy Robbins were tied at 56 points each, and after calculating their average scores using 6 tournaments, Wendy edged out Terry by one point!

Leisure Pool Champion for 2011 is Bev Fournier

Each tournament, we have a Lesiure Pool for players who prefer more relaxed play and may not be proficient in the game, or perhaps just want to learn. Bev was the only player who played enough Tournaments to qualify for the Leisure Pool Champ Prize of a Weekend Getaway to Niagara Falls (which includes one night accommodations at Fallsview Casino Resort (courtesy of The MCC Choir), dinner for 2 at Napoli Ristorante and a helicopter ride for two over the falls (courtesy of Niagara Helicopter). Congratulations Bev!

Tally Sheet

Many Thanks

Thank you to everyone who played in our tournaments this year, or volunteered at them. Thanks to the committee members for all their hard work and dedication! It was a great Euchre season! Special thanks goes out to Carol Steward of Travel Professionals International, for her support of the MCC Toronto Choir and her donation of the Weekend Getaway to Las Vegas. We encourage you all to avail yourself of her services, and the services of all the euchre sponsors!

The Euchre Committee

The Euchre Tournaments take a lot of organization and manpower/womanpower to make happen, and without our committee the Euchre Tournaments would not continue and be as successful as they are.

Committee Lead & Registration Coordinator: Romelda Morson
Staff Liaison: Diane Leah
Registration Assistant: Suzanne Van Rees
Volunteer Coordinator: Jennifer Alexander
Bar/Beverage Coordinator: Cathy Brown
Prize Coordinator: Mark Stephenson
Kitchen/Food Coordinator: Suzanne Christie
Finance Coordinator/Treasurer: Heather Magee

The Choir has also played a major role in every Euchre night, volunteering to do registrations at church three sundays prior to each tournament, and on tournament nights to run the ticket tables, bartend, work in the kitchen, help with the registration table, serve drinks and clean up at the end of each night. Additionally, The Choir has also always provided the salads and desserts on a volunteer basis every night. MANY MANY thanks to each of those who time and time again stepped up to assist wherever help was needed and for providing great food every tournament! Special thanks to Roy Dean who set up all the tables and chairs each night before all other volunteers arrived! Roy has been an invaluable help with this set up! Thank you Roy.

A personal thank you to the Euchre Committee

From Romelda: A small idea was born in Diane Leah’s backyard, when Heather and I suggested we do a few Euchre Tournaments to raise some money to send the Choir to Mexico for the UFMCC World Conference in 2010 – for a total of five tournaments with the goal of raising $6000. The original plan was to keep it simple, really simple. $25 registration fee, 64 players, a cash bar and serve hotdogs and chips for a simple meal and a few prizes for top scores…well we did that for one tournament, and slowly the idea grew, and people loved playing in the tournaments, so we added 3 additional nights for the Mexico fundraising endeavour. We’ve come a long way – to 9 tournaments this year with a Main Pool and a Leisure Pool, top 3 scoring prizes in each pool and a tonne of door prizes every night – all that AND a full smorgasbord of food (keeping the original hot dogs and chips idea, but we’ve upgraded the dogs and added to the menu). All this comes at a cost, so to speak. It costs time and effort. Ideas can be born and often die without a team of people who are dedicated and enthusiastic – these are both qualities this committee has. Thank you all for the time and energy you put into each tournament. They wouldn’t happen without all the effort! And that effort has not gone unnoticed – by myself nor the players. Many of them come to me and comment on how great the euchre nights are and how organized they are, and how much fun they are. Thanks to a great committee people keep coming back! Thank you all for everything you do!

As First Runner-Up Marg has won a dinner for 2 at Prohibition Gastrohouse and a free year of euchre tournaments in 2012! Congratulations Marg. See you in 2012!

The Second Runner-Up Is...

And the Leisure Pool Winner Is...

Praise for the Choir at Jack Layton’s state funeral

You were great on Saturday. What a send-off. You definitely added to message. It was much appreciated. — Al Luiker

The opening Kyrie was beautiful – your voices blending like magic! … The ending was fantastic – Julie out did herself and finishing up with We Are Connected was brilliant and the choir with not a piece of music in sight moving to the music – just terrific!! — Jane Craig

…thanks for singing so spiritedly! I give thanks for the ministries offered at your church, as a progressive Anglican I am…Keep singing, & working for justice & peace! — a Choir Director from B.C.

That closing was spectacular. Very inspiring and an apt end to an inspiring life! Julie Michels was great! — Seonaigh MacPherson

It was fantastic to see everyone in the hall and those out on the lawn clapping and singing along with Julie and the choir. They performed “Get Together/We are connected” like no one else could. The best I’ve heard. With cameras panning to Steven Lewis and Ed Broadbent during the song it was evident that they were deeply moved. — Kathleen Hogan

Wow! Get Connected. Listening to the Album on Napster now! It’s awesome. So glad I found out about you guys! — Bruce Muir

Absolutely soulful and splendid was the music at Jack Layton’s ‘Celebration of Life’. ‘Kyrie’ was wonderful. ‘Get Together’ with Julie Michels and the choir gave me goosebumps. I cannot get your rendition of this 60′s anthem out of my head. I fall asleep with it and wake up with it. I sing it aloud sometimes. The songs message is the same as it was when I was 14, in ’69, it just evokes different feelings and a better understanding from my 56 year old mind. The total choice of music and its rendering at Jack’s service was soulful, thought provoking, sometimes light hearted and always moving. What a tribute to a great Canadian. — Doreen Mason

Wow! Watched the rebroadcast of Mr. Layton’s funeral and could not get this performance out of my head. Days later and I’m still singing “Get Together”. What a sendoff! Makes me want to check out your church. Soulful, uplifting… Thanks — Elizabeth Layne

I have never been so moved by a funeral service and the music was so inspiring and uplifting. I have not been able to stop humming and singing the songs since…
Please make it available for downloading so we can enjoy it and remember Jack with a smile whenever we listen to it….we can be reminded of his mission for all of us to be better Canadians. — Darlene

The choir was wonderful! — Holly Scott
